Hey Lloyd,

Glad you've recovered from the initial shock of the wrist injury and seen sense to continue!

Thought you might appreciate a different wooden structure. It's a Flitzer Z1S, built with sitka spruce and birch ply (mostly 1mm). Constructed over around 10 years from plans, it flew for the first time at the end of August. Cruise is 100 mph and she's fully aerobatic. See YouTube G-ECVZ first flight and Z1S flight.

Fort Ross, Recreated Russian Fort on NorCal Coast

Last week Yogan and I spent an hour exploring the Fort Ross State Historic Park, a masterful re-creation of the Russian Fort built on the Northern California coast in 1812. The Russians brought down Native Alaskan hunters who speared sea otters from seal skin kayaks. Most of the hunters came from the Kodiak Islands and their kayaks, spears, and hunting techniques were extraordinary (more on this later).

If you are ever driving up the Northern California coast, I highly recommend going to this site.

Here is the chapel (star of the show), metal shop, and wood shop. Roofing on these buildings consisted of 2 layers of long planks, laid with the cracks in the top layer over the centers of the under layer.

Fort Ross, Recreated Russian Fort on NorCal Coast

Some Rust Required

Give me something old and rusty any day above something shiny and new. When we were renovating our home a few years ago, I was a constant source of amusement to our builders. They installed a shiny metal balustrade of which they were very proud, and were horrified when the artisan arrived to apply his special technique to make it look rusted, weathered and worn.

 Nearer the end of the project, after looking around for a long time for a suitably aged and weathered surround for our letterbox, I resorted to buying  a new one. My builders, now used to my quirks, suggested I leave it in the swimming pool for a couple of weeks to get the desired look!

The patina of a rusty surface, has so much more character, i.m.h.o., than a shiny new one. 

I am particularly fond of rusted bits and pieces in the garden. They look perfect against a green backdrop.

Touches of rust inside the home also add interest and warmth.
